Office of the Nuclear Reactor Regulation

Dear Mr. Crutchheld:

Subject:

AflWR Design Certification Application Under Part 52 On September 29,1987, the General Electric Company submitted its app'ication for approval by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission of GE's Advanced floiting Water Reactor (A11WR) design.

'lhe GE application was filed in contemplation of, but prior to, Commission adoption of new regulations governing design certification. Subsequently, on April 18, 1989, the Commission '

adopted Part 52 which provides, among other things, for final design approval and subsequent certification of standardized nuclear power plant designs.

Since the adoption of Part 52, both OE and NRC Staff have treated the AllWR application as one covered by Part 52 and review has proceeded in accordance with the requirements of the new regulations. The Staff has asked, and GE concurs, that the Part 52 status of the AllWR application be formally confirmed. Accordingly, this letter will serve to confirm that the A11WR

  • pplication should be processed aa an ap,lication for a Part $2 final design approval and sub:. , , nt desi;n t certification pursuant to 10 CF 1 Section 52.45.
