Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

NRC INSPECTION REPORT NO. 50-272/77-18 INSPECTION DATE(S): MAY 24-26, 1977 NO. 1 UNIT SALEM NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION We have received and reviewed the report of your inspection conducted May 24-26, 1977. The report was transmitted with your letter of June 22, 1977 and received on June 27, 1977.

Our response to the item of noncompliance is as follows:

"Technical Specification 6.8.l requires that procedures be developed, and maintained to implement the Emergency Plan. Emergency Procedures (EP) II-10 requires tha.t emergency equipment be inventoried and checked for proper operation quart~rly.

11 Contrary to the above requirements, only two of four* required q~arterly inventories were conducted during the period July 1976 through May 1977. *This failure to conduct required inventories resulted in certain equipment inventory shortages which were observed during the inspection."

The following corrective action has been taken:

1. ..On May 31, 1977 an inventory was conducted and all discrepancies were corrected.

Mr. J. P. O'Reilly ...;.2- 7/12/77

2. To avoid further items of noncompliance a system has* been initiated which assigns the inventory responsibility to the Safety Supervisor. Having one individual responsible for the quarterly inventory any discrepancies noted will be more closely controlled and corrected in a timely manner.

If you require additional information; we will be pleased to*discuss it with you.

Very truly yours, CC: Dr. Erne~t-Volgenau Bethesda, Maryland
