As was discussed on the June 2,2006 telecon, testing of some of the underground piping systems may not yield useful data. Consequently, SNC plans to test these systems and evaluate the data. However, if the testing does not yield meaningful results, an IS1 alternative may be requested based on hardship consistent with similar relief granted to other licensees. This letter contains no NRC commitments.

Nuclear Regulatory Commission ATTN: Document Control Desk Washington, D. C. 20555-0001 Edwin I. Hatch Nuclear Plant Withdrawal of IS1 Alternative Ladies and Gentlemen:

Southern Nuclear hereby withdraws its Request for IS1 Alternative for Plant Hatch Units 1 and 2 which was submitted by letter NL-05-2118 dated November 17,2005.

This letter requested that the NRC approve an IS1 alternative related to pressure testing and visual examination of buried piping and components. Discussions regarding our submittal were held with the NRC reviewer on June 2,2006. During that discussion it was determined that SNC would review the need for the requested alternative and that the NRC would be advised of our final intent by July 14,2006. On July 13 the NRR Project Manager was verbally advised of our intent to withdraw the requested alternative.

This letter confirms our conversation.

If you have any questions, please advise.

Sincerely, 7 ~

L. M. Stinson
