Victor Dricks (817) 860-8128 E-Mail: OPA4.Resource@nrc.gov Lara Uselding (817) 276-6519 NRC BEGINS SPECIAL INSPECTION AT WOLF CREEK NUCLEAR PLANT The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission is conducting a special inspection at the Wolf Creek Generating Station to review the circumstances surrounding problems with an emergency diesel generator. Wolf Creek, operated by the Wolf Creek Nuclear Operating Corp., is located about three miles north of Burlington, Kan.
During testing on September 1, an emergency diesel generator experienced fluctuations in power output. This caused operators to shut down the diesel generator possibly because of a problem with the control system that regulates the generator. Emergency diesel generators are the main back-up power source to the plants safety systems if there is a loss of offsite power and are tested regularly to ensure operability.
The purpose of this special inspection is to better understand the malfunction and review the licensees corrective actions to ensure that the diesel generator will perform as intended, said Region IVAdministrator Elmo E. Collins.
An NRC inspector will document findings in an inspection report that will be made publicly available within 45 days of the end of the inspection.
