No: IV-14-023 September 23, 2014 CONTACT: Victor Dricks 817-200-1128 Lara Uselding 817-200-1519 NRC to Meet with Officials to Discuss Wolf Creek Nuclear Plant The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will meet with Wolf Creek Nuclear Operating Corp.
(WCNOC) officials on Oct. 2 to discuss long-standing design issues with the cooling water system at the Wolf Creek nuclear plant, located north of Burlington, Kan.
The public meeting will be held from 2-3 p.m. at NRCs Region IV Offices, 1600 E. Lamar Blvd., Arlington, Texas. The public will be invited to ask questions following the discussion between NRC staff and the licensee. Interested parties can participate via phone by dialing 877-918-3007 and entering passcode 24521.
The cooling water system draws water from Coffey County Lake, pumps it to plant systems for cooling purposes and then returns it to the lake. The service water does not come into contact with any radioactive steam or water during this process. There has been a long-standing issue with corrosion and pressure surges in system piping and NRC staff wants to hear the licensees plan to implement design modifications to eliminate the problems.
