Viktoria Mitlyng, 630-829-9662 Prema Chandrathil, 630-829-9663 NRC to Conduct Open House to Discuss 2016 Performance of Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Plant Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will be available to discuss the 2016 safety performance of the Davis-Besse nuclear power plant operated by FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Co., during an open house planned for July 19, in Oak Harbor, Ohio, located about 21 miles east of Toledo.

The open house will be held from 6-7:30 p.m., at the Carroll Township Service Complex, 11080 West Toussaint East Rd., in Oak Harbor. On hand to discuss the plants performance and the NRCs oversight of the facility will be agency employees responsible for inspections of the plant, including the resident inspectors based at the site on a full-time basis.

The NRC concluded that Davis-Besse operated safely during 2016. All inspection findings for the plant were green. However, the plant had a white (low to moderate safety significance) performance indicator in the area of unplanned shutdowns with complications throughout 2016. This resulted in increased NRC oversight.

In March, the NRC conducted a supplemental inspection to follow up on the issue and determined the plant had taken appropriate actions. The plant transitioned to normal oversight in May.

We independently assess each plants performance and focus our inspections on specific areas of concern, said NRC Region III Regional Administrator Cynthia D. Pederson. Our plans for the remainder of the year include reviews in areas such as emergency preparedness and licensed operator training.

The NRC Reactor Oversight Process uses color-coded inspection findings and indicators to measure plant performance. The colors begin with green and increase to white, yellow, or red, commensurate with the safety significance of the issues involved. Any inspection findings or performance indicators that have more than very low safety significance trigger increased NRC oversight. Performance indicators are statistical measurements of plant and equipment performance.

Day-to-day inspections are performed by two resident inspectors assigned to the plant. Reviews are also carried out at the sites by specialist inspectors assigned to the agencys Region III office in Lisle, Ill.
