NRC NEWS U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION Office of Public Affairs Region III 2443 Warrenville Road Lisle IL 60532 No. III-10-034 August 25, 2010 Contacts: E-Mail: opa3@nrc.gov Viktoria Mitlyng 630-829-9662 Web site: www.nrc.gov Prema Chandrathil 630-829-9663 NRC SCHEDULES PUBLIC MEETING TO DISCUSS SPECIAL INSPECTION TEAM RESULTS FOR DAVIS-BESSE NUCLEAR POWER PLANT The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has scheduled a public meeting in Oak Harbor, Ohio, Thursday, Sept. 9 to discuss the results of a Special Inspection Team review of cracks and leakage in nozzles located on the reactor head at the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station. The plant is located in Oak Harbor roughly 40 miles southeast of Toledo and is operated by FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company (FENOC).

The meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. in the Oak Harbor High School, 11661 W. State Route 163. The meeting is open to the public and the NRC staff will be available to answer questions after the business portion of the meeting.

Last March, the NRC dispatched a Special Inspection Team to the plant to evaluate the cracks and leakage identified in multiple Control Rod Drive Mechanism (CRDM) nozzles. The CRDM nozzles guide the control rods into the reactor core to shut down the reactor. Seven NRC inspectors were part of the special inspection activities. These inspectors conducted extensive observations and reviews of the utilitys repairs and root cause.

In June, FENOC agreed to a number of commitments, including shutting down the reactor to replace the reactor head no later than Oct. 1, 2011. The commitments were detailed in a NRC confirmatory action letter issued to the company.

The announcement for the special inspection exit meeting is available online at http://www.nrc.gov/public-involve.html. In addition, the inspection team will issue a publically-available written report detailing its final results within 45 days of this special inspection exit meeting.
