NRC TO CONDUCT ENVIRONMENTAL SCOPING MEETING AS PART OF THE

LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION FOR DAVIS BESSE; MEETING NOV. 4

Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will hold a public meeting on Wed., Nov. 4, in Port

Clinton, Ohio, to discuss the agencys review process and the environmental issues the agency

should consider in reviewing the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station license renewal application.

The meetings will be held at the Camp Perry Lodging and Conference Center, 1000

Lawrence Road, Building 600 in Port Clinton. The staff will start the first of the two-hour

sessions at 1:30 p.m. and the second at 7 p.m. The NRC will also host an open house

beginning one hour before the start of each meeting to provide interested citizens with an

opportunity to talk informally with agency staff. However, comments must be expressed during

the transcribed meetings in order to be formally considered by NRC staff.

Both sessions will start with an NRC presentation on the agencys review and

environmental scoping process that is part of the license renewal review. Following the

presentations, audience members will have an opportunity to provide comments on

environmental issues that the agency should consider in its review of the Davis-Besse license

renewal application.

Public input is a cornerstone of the license review process and environmental scoping,

said NRC Branch Chief Davis Wrona. As an open and transparent agency, the NRC considers

it important to seek input from residents around the plant about the environmental issues they

consider significant."

The NRC staff will prepare a summary of its conclusions on significant issues and

provide a copy to each person who participated in the scoping process and provided contact

information.

Additional information on the license renewal process is available on the NRCs website

at: http://www.nrc.gov/reactors/operating/licensing/renewal.html.

The Davis-Besse nuclear plants pressurized-water reactor is located in Oak Harbor,

Ohio, approximately 21 miles southeast of Toledo.

Under NRC regulations, the original operating license for a nuclear power plant has a

term of 40 years. The license may be renewed for up to an additional 20 years if NRC

requirements are met. The current operating license for Davis-Besse expires on April 22, 2017.

The plants owner, FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Co., submitted the license renewal application

on Aug. 30.

Members of the public may register to present oral comments at this meeting by

contacting Paula Cooper at (800) 368-5642 x2323 or by email at paula.cooper@nrc.gov. Those

who wish to make comments may also register at the meeting within 15 minutes of the start of

each session.
