NRC NEWS U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION OFFICE OF PUBLIC AFFAIRS, REGION I 475 Allendale Road King of Prussia, PA 19406 No. I-02-004 January 18, 2002 CONTACT: Diane Screnci, (610) 337-5330 E-mail: OPA1@NRC.GOV Neil A. Sheehan, (610) 337-5331 NRC TO MEET WITH NEW JERSEY COMPANY TO DISCUSS SITE CLEANUP PLANS Nuclear Regulatory Commission officials will meet with representatives of Heritage Minerals, Inc., on Tuesday, January 22, to discuss the companys plans to complete the decommissioning of a site it owns in Lakehurst, N.J.

The meeting, which begins at 10:30 a.m., will be held in the Public Meeting Room at the NRC Region I office, 475 Allendale Road, in King of Prussia, Pa. It will be open to the public for observation.

Located off Route 70, the site was used at one time for the mining and processing of local monazite ores to extract heavy minerals. ASARCO, Inc., began operation at the site in 1973, followed by Heritage Minerals, which ceased processing operations in August 1990.

The processing of the ores resulted in a waste pile containing natural thorium and uranium in sufficient quantities to require an NRC license.

Most of the material has now been shipped off-site. Heritage Minerals is in the process of finalizing plans for the removal of any remaining materials and to ensure that the site is adequately cleaned up.
