NRC NEWS U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION Office of Public Affairs Telephone: 301/415-8200 Washington, D.C. 20555-0001 E-mail: opa.resource@nrc.gov Site: www.nrc.gov Blog: http://public-blog.nrc-gateway.gov No.11-228 December 27, 2011 NRC ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON REACTOR SAFEGUARDS TO MEET JAN. 19-20 IN ROCKVILLE, MD.; 2012 LEADERSHIP AND MEETING SCHEDULE The Nuclear Regulatory Commissions Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards (ACRS) will hold a public meeting Jan. 19-20, 2012, in Rockville, Md., to discuss several issues of current interest. Topics include:

  • Turkey Point Units 3 and 4 extended power uprate application;
  • Draft Final Report on the Biennial ACRS Review of the NRC Safety Research Program; and
  • Augmented Inspection Team Report on North Anna.

The ACRS advises the Commission, independently from the NRC staff, on safety issues related to the licensing and operation of nuclear power plants, as well as those issues in the areas of health physics and radiation protection.

The meeting will be held in Room T-2B1 of the agencys Two White Flint North building, at 11545 Rockville Pike. Sessions on Thursday, Jan. 19, will run from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.; sessions on Friday, Jan. 20, will run from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Portions of the meetings may be closed to discuss proprietary information as well as organizational and personnel matters.

In other business, the ACRS has elected Dr. J. Sam Armijo, John W. Stetkar and Harold B. Ray to leadership positions on the Committee.

Dr. Armijo formerly served as the vice-chairman and now serves as the chairman of the ACRS. He is internationally recognized as a technical expert in nuclear fuels, plant materials, water chemistry and advanced nuclear power systems. Dr. Armijo retired in 1999 from General Electric Nuclear Energy, where he worked as general manager of the Nuclear Fuel Business and as chief technologist. Dr. Armijo holds a doctorate in material science from Stanford University.

John W. Stetkar formerly served as member-at-large and now serves as the vice-chairman of the ACRS. Stetkar has more than 30 years of experience as an engineering consultant. He is an internationally recognized expert in the fields of risk assessment and reliability analysis.

Stetkar holds a B.S. in electrical engineering and a M.S. in nuclear and environmental engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Harold B. Ray is the newly elected member-at-large. His career at Southern California Edison spanned more than 36 years. Ray served as the chief nuclear officer responsible for all nuclear facilities and programs and for all power-generating facilities. Ray earned his B.S. in mechanical engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles, and his M.S. from California Institute of Technology. He also earned a M.S. in management from Claremont Graduate School.

The ACRS has also posted its 2012 schedule on the NRCs website. The meetings are scheduled for the following dates: Jan. 19-20, Feb. 9-11, Mar. 8-10, Apr. 12-14, May 10-12, Jun.

6-8, Jul. 11-13, Sep. 6-8, Oct. 4-6, Nov. 1-3 and Dec. 6-8.
