NRC NEWS U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION Office of Public Affairs Telephone: 301/415-8200 Washington, D.C. 20555-0001 E-mail: opa@nrc.gov Site: http://www.nrc.gov No.09-039 March 2, 2009 NRC INVITES NOMINATIONS FOR ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON MEDICAL USE OF ISOTOPES The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is seeking nominations for the position of radiation oncologist on the Advisory Committee on the Medical Uses of Isotopes (ACMUI).

Committee members currently serve a four-year term and may be considered for reappointment to an additional term.

The ACMUI advises NRC on policy and technical issues that arise in the regulation of the medical use of radioactive materials. Responsibilities include providing comments on changes to NRC rules, regulations, and guidance documents; evaluating certain non-routine uses of radioactive material; providing technical assistance in licensing, inspection, and enforcement cases; and bringing key issues to the attention of NRC for appropriate action.

ACMUI members possess the medical and technical skills needed to address evolving issues. The current membership is comprised of the following positions: nuclear medicine physician; nuclear cardiologist; medical physicist in nuclear medicine [unsealed byproduct material]; therapy medical physicist; radiation safety officer; nuclear pharmacist; two radiation oncologists; patients' rights advocate; Food and Drug Administration representative; state representative; and health care administrator.

Nominees must be U.S. citizens and be able to devote approximately 160 hours0.00185 days <br />0.0444 hours <br />2.645503e-4 weeks <br />6.088e-5 months <br /> per year to Committee business and have current radiotherapy experience using a Gamma Knife.

Members who are not federal employees are compensated for their service. In addition, non-federal members are reimbursed for travel, secretarial and correspondence expenses. Full-time federal employees are reimbursed for travel expenses only. The selected nominee will undergo a thorough security background check. Security paperwork may take the nominee several weeks to complete. Nominees will also be required to complete a financial disclosure statement to avoid conflicts of interest.
