NRC NEWS U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION Office of Public Affairs Telephone: 301/415-8200 Washington, D.C. 20555-0001 E-mail: opa@nrc.gov Web Site: http://www.nrc.gov No.06-132 October 23, 2006 NRC FINDS NO SIGNIFICANT ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS FROM EXTENDED OPERATION OF PALISADES NUCLEAR POWER PLANT The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has issued its final environmental impact statement on the proposed renewal of the operating license for the Palisades Nuclear Plant. The report contains the NRCs finding that there are no environmental impacts that would preclude license renewal for an additional 20 years of operation.

The Palisades plant is located on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, approximately 4.5 miles south of South Haven, Mich. The current operating license expires March 24, 2011. Nuclear Management Company submitted an application for renewal of the license March 24, 2005.

As part of its environmental review of the application, the NRC held public meetings near the plant to discuss the scope of the review and the draft version of the environmental impact statement.

Comments were received and considered from members of the public, local officials, and representatives of state and federal agencies.

The Palisades Final Environmental Impact Statement is available on the NRCs Web site at this address: http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/doc-collections/nuregs/staff/sr1437/supplement27/index.html .

Copies are also available for inspection at the NRCs Public Document Room at One White Flint North, 11555 Rockville Pike, Rockville, Md; and at the South Haven Memorial Library, 314 Broadway St., South Haven, Mich.
