NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION Office of Public Affairs Telephone 301/415-8200 Washington, DC 20555-0001 E-mail: opa@nrc.gov Web Site: www.nrc.gov No.03-104 August 18, 2003 NRC FINDS RENEWAL OF FORT CALHOUN NUCLEAR PLANT OPERATING LICENSE ENVIRONMENTALLY ACCEPTABLE The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has issued its final environmental impact statement on the proposed renewal of the operating license of Unit 1 at the Fort Calhoun Station nuclear power plant. In the statement, the NRC staff found there are no environmental impacts that would preclude license renewal for an additional 20 years of operation.

The Fort Calhoun Station nuclear facility is located 19 miles north of Omaha, Nebraska, in Washington County. The current operating license for Unit 1 expires on August 9, 2013.

The Omaha Public Power District, the operator of the plant, submitted the application for the renewal of the license on January 9, 2002.

As part of its environmental review of the application, the NRC held public meetings near the plant to discuss the scope of the review and a draft version of the environmental impact statement. Comments were received from members of the public, local officials and representatives of other agencies.
