NRC NEWS U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION Office of Public Affairs Telephone: 301/415-8200 Washington, DC 20555-0001 E-mail: opa@nrc.gov Web Site: www.nrc.gov No.03-038 March 27, 2003 NRCS ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON THE MEDICAL USES OF ISOTOPES TO HOLD PUBLIC MEETING MAY 20-21 The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will convene a meeting of the Advisory Committee on the Medical Uses of Isotopes on May 20 and 21 at its headquarters in Rockville, Maryland.

All sessions of the meeting will be open to the public, except the first session, which will be closed to conduct administrative business. Among the agenda items for the public sessions are:

  • Follow-up discussion of the ACMUIs recommendations on the training and experience requirements contained in NRCs regulations on the medical uses of radioactive material;
  • Written directives as they pertain to certain uses of brachytherapy, a treatment for early stages of cancer;
  • The ACMUIs Subcommittee activities to address the medical uses of emerging technologies;
  • An update to the Government Accounting Office review of the domestic use of radioactive material;
  • A pilot project on information exchange with Agreement States regarding the regulation of radioactive materials; and
  • Physical presence requirements during stereotactic radiosurgery treatments.

The public sessions will be held on Tuesday, May 20, from 1 to 5 p.m., and Wednesday, May 21, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The meeting will be held at NRC headquarters, 11545 Rockville Pike, in Conference Room T-2B3.

Persons who wish to provide a written statement should submit a reproducible copy to Angela R. Williamson, Office of Nuclear Materials Safety and Safeguards, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Mail Stop T-8F5, Washington, DC 20555-0001. Alternately, statements may be e-mailed to Ms. Williamson at arw@nrc.gov . Submissions should be postmarked by May 13 and must pertain to the topics on the meeting agenda.

Questions from the public will be permitted during the meeting, at the discretion of the chairman. Transcripts of the meeting and written comments will be available about July 21 on the NRCs web site, http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/doc-collections/acmui/tr/ , and in the NRC Public Document Room, 11555 Rockville Pike, telephone (800) 397-4209. Minutes of the meeting will be available about August 20.
