DEGRADED HIGH PRESSURE INJECTION PUMPS -
UPDATE licensee continued maintaining stable reactor coolant system (RCS) conditions with one reactor coolant pump and one decay heat removal pump in operation. At about 10:30 a.m. on May 4, 1997 the RCS was at 230 degrees F and 277 psig. Investigation revealed that the letdown storage tank level instrumentation reference leg was found to be about 45 inches low which resulted in a false high indicated level.
Following a safety committee review of special system procedures and contingency plans, the licensee filled, vented, and flushed the suction piping for the 3C HPI pump. At about 11:20 a.m. on May 4, 1997 the C pump was started and is operating normally. At 12:15 p.m. the licensee recommended a normal cooldown and placed the RCS in cold shutdown at about 2:00 p.m.
The NRC Region II Incident Response Center has been continuously staffed in:the Monitoring Phase. The NRC resident inspectors, augmented by a Region II specialist and manager, have provided 24-hour inspection of onsite activities including safety committee meetings, control room operations, Technical Support Center activities, and equipment observations.
This information is up to date as of 2:00 p.m., May 4, 1997.
The State of South Carolina has been notified.
