Dear Dr. Murley:

Westinghouse has completed preliminary design and engineering of the Advanced Pressurized Water Reactor (APWR), and is currently working on final design and engineering efforts. Accordingly, the final module of RESAR-SP/90 was submitted to your staff in March of this year--completing all module submittals of this PDA application.

With these milestones accomplished, I appreciated the opportunity to describe Westinghouse's plans for future licensing action on the APWR and the Advanced 600MWe (ALWR) reactor designs. As we discussed, the issuance of the Staff PDA on RESAR-SP/90 will provide the basis for the planned submittal of the APWR for an FDA leading to certification. Timely Staff review conclusion of the PDA application on the APWR is needed to complete this licensing phase which was begun in 1982. Based on our projected schedule for final design and engineering of the APWR for FDA application, we are dedicated to make available those Westinghouse resources necessary to facilitate the Staff conclusion of j the PDA licensing process for the APWR in 1987. Having an extensive review already completed on RESAR-SP/90, we are encouraged that the issuance of the PDA on this application could be achieved in the first quarter of 1988.

I hope that the information we discussed will be of assistance in clarifying the Westinghouse plans for future FDA and Design Certification efforts, and will contribute to your current resource planning activities.

Very truly yours,
