Change in Estimated Review Schedule for BWRVIP-100, Revision 2, Updated Assessment of the Fracture Toughness of Irradiated Stainless Steel for BWR Internal Components (EPID L-2023-NTR-0005)

Martin Bonifanti, Constellation, BWRVIP Chairman Nathan Palm, EPRI, BWRVIP Program Manager Electric Power Research Institute 1300 West W.T. Harris Blvd Charlotte, NC 28262-8550

Dear Martin Bonifanti and Nathan Palm:

By letter dated July 11, 2023 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS)

Accession No. ML23198A333), Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) submitted BWRVIP-100, BWR Vessel and Internals Project, Updated Assessment of the Fracture Toughness of Irradiated Stainless Steel for BWR Internal Components, Revision 2, to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for review and approval. Revision 2 of BWRVIP-100 incorporations newly acquired test data from harvested reactor internals materials which may indicated a potential non-conservatism in BWRVIP-100, Revision 1-A and reassess the relationship between fracture toughness and fluence. The NRC staff reviewed and accepted the technical report on September 14, 2023 (ADAMS Accession No. ML23214A047).

On September 14, 2023 (ADAMS Accession No. ML23214A047), the NRC staff notified you that your request had been accepted for review, and the NRC staff estimated it would issue the draft safety evaluation by complete the review by September 9, 2024. Through a proprietary meeting on August 7, 2024, and a nonproprietary meeting on August 21, 2024 (ADAMS Accession No. ML24219A034),

the NRC staff and EPRI representatives discussed EPRIs request for additional information (ADAMS Accession No. ML24131A043). During these meetings, the NRC staff and EPRI representatives agreed that additional information was needed and EPRI would voluntarily supplement the information. During routine status calls, the EPRI representatives informed the NRC staff that the supplemental information would be submitted by October 31, 2024. Therefore, the NRC staff needs to update the schedule for the NRC staffs review of BWRVIP-100, Revision 2.

The purpose of this email is to officially inform you of the revised schedule. The revised issuance date for the draft safety evaluation for BWRVIP-100, Revision 2, is May 16, 2025.
