Change in Review Schedule - Harris RIPE Exemption (L-2024-LLE-0004)

Hi Dennis,

By application dated February 6, 2024 (ML24037A284), as supplemented by letters dated April 3, 2024 (ML24058A246), and June 7, 2024 (ML24159A746), Duke Energy Progress, LLC (Duke or the licensee), pursuant to Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR) Section 50.12, Specific exemptions, requested an exemption from certain requirements of 10 CFR 50.55a(h)(2), Protection systems, requiring protection systems meet the requirements of IEEE 279-1971, Criteria for Protection Systems for Nuclear Power Generating Stations, for Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant (Harris).

On April 17, 2024 (ML24094A328), the NRC staff notified you that your request had been accepted for review, and the NRC staff estimated it would complete the review by June 7, 2024, and require 105 hours0.00122 days
0.0292 hours
1.736111e-4 weeks
3.99525e-5 months
.

In the April 17, 2024, letter, it was stated that additional clarity was needed in the areas of adverse impacts and defense-in-depth. A virtual audit was performed for the staff to gain an understanding of these areas. An audit plan was sent on April 22, 2024 (ML24113A252) and on May 22, 2024, an audit call was held. At the conclusion of the audit, the licensee informed the NRC that a supplement was to be sent to the NRC addressing the audit plan dated April 22, 2024. A supplement dated June 7, 2024 (ML24159A746) addressed the audit plan t opics. The purpose of this email is to officially inform you that the NRC staff now expects to complete its review by July 28, 2024.

If there are emergent complexities or challenges in our review that would result in a change to the estimated completion date or significant changes in the estimated hours, the reasons for the change, and a revised estimate will be communicated during routine interactions with the assigned project manager. The change in the estimated completion date was discussed with and approved by the Deputy Director for the Division of Operating Reactor Licensing.

If you have any questions, please contact me.
