Final Request for Additional Information - Mitsubishi Electric Power Products, Inc. (MEPPI) JEXU-1041-1008, Safety System Digital Platform - MELTAC (EPID L-2023-TOP-0036)

Date:

Friday, January 19, 2024 1:15:05 PM Jay Sneddon Department Manager Mitsubishi Electric Power Products, Inc. (MEPPI)

Nuclear Systems Department (NSD) 547 Keystone Drive Suite 200 Warrendale, PA 15086

Mr. Sneddon,

By letter dated June 16, 2023 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML23167C168), Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (MELCO, the vendor) requested review of a topical report on the revised Mitsubishi Electric Total Advanced Controller (MELTAC) Platform. The MELTAC Platform is a computer based programmable-logic controller consisting of a pre-defined set of hardware and software components which was developed for nuclear applications. The staff accepted the MELTAC Platform for review on August 16, 2023 (ADAMS Accession No.ML23179A168)

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff in the Instrumentation & Controls BranchB (EICB) in the Division of Engineering and External Hazards (DEX) is in the process of reviewing your application. Based on our review, the NRC staff has identified the attached final requests for additional information (RAIs). The proprietary version of the RAIs is provided in Enclosure 1 and has been placed in the box.com folder (yourself and Furuno Kenichi have been given access to the document). The non-proprietary version of the RAIs is provided in and can be accessed in the Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS).

On January 17, 2024, the NRC staff held a clarification call with MELCO to ensure that MELCO understood the information being sought in the RAIs. During that meeting, MELCO directed the NRC staff to information already available to the staff that provided the information to one of the RAIs. Therefore, the RAI was removed, and MELCO does not need to provide additional information. The deleted RAI is provided in Enclosure 3 and can be accessed in ADAMS.

These RAIs were discussed with MELCO staff on January 17, 2024, and a mutually agreeable date for the response is within 30 days from the date of this e-mail.

Sincerely,

Lois M. James, Senior Project Manager Division of New and Renewed Licenses (DNRL)
