By' letter dated May 23,1997. Carolina Power & Light Company (CP&L) applied for an amendment to the Operating License Nos. DPR-71 and DPR-62 for the Brunswick Steam

Electric Plant Units 1 and 2. The proposed change would have reduced the short-term limit for Dose Equivalent 1-131 activity in the reactor coolant from 4.0 microcuries/ gram to 3.0 microcuries/ gram.' Subsequently, by le+ter dated April 17,1998, CP&L withdrew the amendment request based upon a revised calculation showing acceptable control rcom dose following a main steam line break accident with a reactor coolant specific activity of 4.0 microcuries/ gram dose equivalent 1-131.
In the "BSEP-98-0077, Withdraws 970523 Request for Amends to Licenses DPR-62 & DPR-71,reducing Max Allowed Reactor Coolant Specific Activity from 4.0 to 3.0 Uci/Gram Dose Equivalent [[Isotope" contains a listed "[" character as part of the property label and has therefore been classified as invalid..Rev 5 to Calculation CP&L-CED-M-01,encl|April 17,1998, letter]], CP&L reiterated its commitment to maintain an administrative limit of 0.1 microcuries/ gram dose equivalent 1-131 for reactor coolant activity until the NRC approves the revised calculation.
The Commission has filed the enclosed Notice of Withdrawal of Application for Amendment to Facility Operating License with the Office of the Federal Register for publication.
