February 5, 1987 OI:RV Case Numberi 5-86,010 On January 26, 1987, Wayne M. HAMPTON, a Chemistry Technician at the Sacramento Municipal Utility District's (SMUD) Rancho Seco Nuclear Generating Station (Rancho Seco), was interviewed by Senior Investigated Ronald A. Meeks.
HAMPTON was interviewed at NRC's Resident Inspector office at Rancho Seco.

relative to his knowledge of the alteration of counting times in conjunction with the analysis of radioactivity in water centained in the Regenerate Holdup Tank (RHUT) at Rancho Seco.
With respect to the alteration of counting time, HAMPTON stated:

The Canberra Computer Program was set up for 2000 second counts to assure compliance with Rancho Seco's Technical Specification on Lower Limits of Detection (LLD).

HAMPTON assumed the 1000 second count was brought about as a result of a LLD study which showed yo's could count for 1000 seconds and still rheet Rancho Seco's Technical Specification LLD.
3.
HAMPTON received instructions on the 1000 second count from his supervisor but he doesn't recall instructions on 1000 second count being procedura11 zed.
4.
HAMPTON recalls instructions on the bulletin board in the Chemistry Lab regarding a 1000 second count.
