i QUESTION 7.- What risks are posed by transporting the tailings?

ANSWER.-

The risks from transportation of tailings are more from common

'(nonradiological) effects than they.are from radiological effects. Truckers and construction workers are the groups more at risk from transportation of the tailings. The radiological risk to truckers and construction workers, while on the existing or disposal sites, are limited under the provisions of 10 CFR Part 20 regulations as administered by NRC or equivalent requirements administered by DOE. Spillage caused by an accident wculd be promptly cleaned up, and thus would pose insignificant additional exposures to either workers or the general population.

The nonradiological risk to workers posed by the transportation of uranium mill tailings is a function of the length of haul, frequency of haul, capacity levels of the vehicles, and the degree of traffic safety over portions of the haul roads. For example, for the transport of uranium niill tailings from the Edgemont, South Dakota uranium mill to the disposal site, it was estimated that there was a .06 probability of a fatality from the truck hauling.
