What steps are taken.to ensure the safe transportation of the tailings?

ANSWER.

NRC licensees and DOE contractors are required to follow U.S. Department of Transportation (00T) regulations, to ensure an acceptable level of transportation safety.

In addition, TVA's Edgemont relocation, effort utilized the construction of a haul road dedicated to the uranium mill tailings transport. Parallel one-way roads for incoming and outgoing traffic reduced the collision hazards. Also limiting truck transport to caylight hours is considered when public roads constitute a portion of the haul route.
