QUESTION 3.

Why are the tailings being transported?

ANSWER.

As required by the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), the NRC and the DOE performed' environmental analysis of the various options under consideration.

These options usually included no action, stabilization in place, stabilization on site, and one or more relocation strategies. The costs and benefits were compared for the various choices.

In scue cases the NEPA analysis supported the relocation of the uranium tailings to other sites.
