Has the'NRC been. involved in projects involving the
. transportation of-uranium or thorium tailings?

. ANSWER.
L Yes. Uranium mill. tailings have been transported from one NRC-licensed uranium milling facility located in Edgemont, South Dakota, Under this NRC
' license the Tennessee Valley' Authority (TVA). transported the' uranium mill
. tailings to'a. disposal site which is ~about 3 kilometers from the city of Edgemont, South Dakota. In addition, NRC has a concurrence role in. the U.S.
DepartmentofEnergy's(DOE's)UraniumMillTailingsRemedialActionProject (UMTRAP), which is being' carried out'under Title I of the Uranium Mill Tailings.
Radiation-ControlAct(UMTRCA). DOE'has relocated uranium mill tailings.from some of the sites, such as the former Vitro site'in Salt Lake City, Utah and
- the site at Lakeview, Oregon. DOE -is considering moving uranium mill tailings-from other sites in the UMTRAP. This is discussed in detail in the answer to
' Question'2.
The NRC has not authorized the transport of thorium tailing from any site.
