SUBJECT:

Virgil C. Summer Nuclear Station Docket No. 50/395 Operating License No. NPF-12 Generic Letter 89-06 Safety Parameter Display System Gentlemen:

In a letter dated November 13, 1987, South Carolina Electric & Gas Company (SCE&G) received the NRC staff's evaluation of the Virgil C. Summer Nuclear Station Safety Parameter Display System (SPDS). The staff concluded that even though the presently installed SPDS did not fully satisfy the requirements of Generic Letter 82-33 the system operation was acceptable until upgrades could be implemented. SCE&G subsequently informed the NRC in a letter dated June 16, 1988, that new hardware and software would be procured and on installation the SPDS would be in full compliance with NRC requirements as addressed in Supplement 1 to NUREG 0737. A tentative schedule for the upgrades was provided by SCE&G in a letter dated March 6, 1989.

In accordance with the requirements of Generic Letter 89-06, SCE&G provides certification that the SPDS modifications will fully meet the requirements of NUREG-0737, Supplement 1, taking into account the information provided in NUREG-1342. The vendor for the new system has recently been selected and an updated schedule is attached. Supporting documentation, including a completed checklist and photographs of the new system, will be retained for a minimum of three years.

If you should have any questions, please advise.

Very truly yours, N
