Subject:

Annual Summary of Changes, Tests and Experiments at Aerotest Radiography and Research Reactor (ARRR), Docket No. 50-228, for period ending 6/30/87

Dear Mr. Scarano:

The enclosed report summarizes the ARRR operations from July 1, 1986 t hrough June 30, 1987. This submittal complies with the requirements set forth in 10 CFR, part 50.59, " Authorization of Changes, Tests and Experiments." Summary forms of monthly opera-tions and unscheduled power reductions are included.

As shown in the summary table of unscheduled shutdowns, all of the events were occasioned by high water temperature (pool) and electric power failure. The set point for the temperature scram was raised to 125 degrees F and we elected to also service the l

heat exchanger. Since this service, we have experienced no further scrams from water temperature.

A new uninterruptible power supply (UPS) has been supplied by the original manufacturer and operates in a fully synchronized mode with the utility lines. We believe that this will-minimize even further our power failure scrams.

I Other than the above, no unusual problems have been noted during

the year and the reactor has been operating in a safe and reliable manner, l

i Very truly yours, AER0 TEST OP RATLC S, INC.
