SUBJECT:

DAILY HIGHLIGHT .

Palo Verde LPSI Pumos )

On 1/31/84 Ed Van Brunt (APS) informed us that following changes to the LPSI pump design at Palo Verde, to correct a potential deficiency reported in October 1983, the oumo encountered the same problem (pump tripping and stalling) during retest as it did in October 1983. Ed Van Brunt stated that APS and CE are evaluating this ,

situation and that the LPSI pump is currently on the critical path for fuel load on Unit 1.

On 2/3/84, Gaston Fiorelli (Palo Verde Resident inspector) also informed us about the continued LPSI pump problems. Gaston Fiorelli stated that the pump was manu-factured by Ingersol Rand and 'has a Westinghouse motor. At this point, it has not been clearly established whether the problem lies with the pump or motor (or both).

The LPSI pump is similar

~

in design as the containment spray pumps at Palo Verde.

Gaston Fiorelli stated that he has recommended to Region V that they transfer lead responsibility on this matter to NRR. -
