. RESPONSE TO GENERIC LETTER 87-06 PERIODIC VERIFICATION OF LEAK TIGHT INTEGRITY OF PRESSURE ISOLATION VALVES Gentlemen:
On March 13,1987, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff issued Generic Letter 87-06, " Periodic Verification of Leak Tight Integrity of Pressure Isolation,
Valves." In the generic letter, the NRC staff requested information regarding periodic testing or verification of leak tight integrity of pressure isolation valves (PIVs)., The request included: listing of PlVs, description of periodic testing, leakage acceptance
'l criteria, operational limits, and testing frequency. -
The generic letter defines PIVs "for each interface as any two valves in series within the reactor coolant pressure boundary which separate the high pressure reactor coolant system (RCS) from an attached low pressure system." This is a broad definition that.
could be interpreted to include valves other than those generally' defined as PlVs.
Therefore, on April 15,1987 Carolina Power & Light Company (CP&L) contacted the staff (Mr. Owen Rothberg) to obtain a clarification. The staff confirmed that the scope was limited to water-to-water system valves, primarily the interface between the RCS and the Emergency Core Cooling System. The staff also confirmed that vent valves and other miscellaneous valves, such as sampling lines, were excluded from the scope.
