Dear Mr. Farrar:
SUBJECT:
ZION 1 AND 2 - 10 CFR 50.62, ATWS - REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION 10 CFR 50.62, " Requirements for Reduction of Risk from Anticipated Transients Without Scram (ATWS) Events for Light-Water-Cooled Nuclear Power Plants" requires improvements in the design and operation of commercial nuclear power facilities to reduce the likelihood of failure to shutdown the reactor following anticipated transients, and to mitigate the consequences of an ATWS event. The requirements for Westinghouse plants such as Zion are to provide a diverse auxiliary feedwater system (AFWS) actuation and diverse initiation of turbine trip. Paragraph (c)(6) of the rule requires that information sufficient to demonstrate compliance with these requirements be submitted to NRR.
Commonwealth Edison Company provided information by letter dated June 5, 1986, concerning implementation of the ATWS rule requirements at Zion Units 1 and 2.
l We have reviewed that information and concluded that it is not sufficient to determine compliance with 10 CFR 50.62.
Enclosed is our safety evaluation and request for additional information.
Please provide your response within 30 days of the receipt of this letter.
Sincerely, 5
Ste en A Varga, Director Project irectortate #3 Division of PWR Licensing-A
