Include tho above documents from any and all alpha and .

gamma spectrometry-counting that was performed for all water samples (filtered, and unfiltered and any particulate that was filtered out and counted) fish samples.

Please also include a copy of any laboratory procedures that you followed related to when to filter a sample, when to count filtered solubles, and what your protocol is when a blank is found to be contaminated.

We would appreciate obtaining the above documentation no later than February 17, 1995.

FILTERING OF SAMPLES

\

Dear Ms. Grimmett\

We recently sent you a letter dated January 18, 1995, responding to concerns you had regarding the counting of water samples collected in and around Wingfoot Lake. In our letter, we discussed the " additional" three water samples that were collected and analyzed several months after the first nine samples. Based.on information we received from Mr. Eric Abelquist at the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (0 RISE), we stated these three water samples were filtered prior to counting, but their filtrate was not counted.

On January 24; 1995, we received a telephone call from Mr. Abelquist, who called to inform us that after further review, and contrary to what he had told us previously, two of the additional three samples had not o been filtered prior to being counted. The two samples not filtered were the residential well samples. The third sample, from the monitoring well at the Goodyear )

facility, had-been filtered prior to counting as previously stated. We apologize for any confusion this may have caused.

Sincerely, LdL S.21 Gary L. Shear, Chief

PREPARATION OF WATER SAMPLES FROM VICINITY PROPERTIES AND WINGFOOT LAKE, GOOIWEAR AEROSPACE, AKRON, OHIO l

Dear Mr. Snell:

1 Per your request, the Environmental Survey and Site Assessment Program (ESSAP) of ORISE ,

is providing information on the sample preparation for two water samples collected at residences on Glenview Drive and one water sample from Wingfoot Lake. The two water samples from residences were not filtered prior to analysis since they exhibited no suspended material. The water sample from Wingfoot Cake was filtered prior to analysis.

If you have any questions regarding this information, please contact me at (615) 576-3740 or Mark Laudeman at (615) 576-3561.

RESULTS OF THE LABORATORY ANALYSIS FOR TIIE FISH SAMPLE FROM WINGFOOT LAKE, NEAR GOODYEAR AEROSPACE, AKRON, OHIO

Dear Mr. Snell:

It is impe'rative that all analytical data be evaluated relative to quality control (QC) samples.

These QC samples are analyzed concurrently with the samples to validate and qualify the analytical results. The subject fish sample was analyzed by alpha spectrometry for total uranium concentration on June 13, 1994. As subsequently reported to you, the reagent blank showed activity above acceptable limits. This indicates that this analytical batch was contaminated and that results for this batch are unacceptable.

If you have any questions regarding this issue, please contact me at (615) 576-3740.
