Docket Nos.: 50-369 and 50-370 2 S MAY I333 Mr. H. B. Tucker, Vice President Nuclear Production Department Duke Power Company 422 South Church Street Charlotte, North Carolina 28242
Dear Mr. Tucker:
SUBJECT:
REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION REGARDING PRESSURIZED THERMAL SHOCK PROTECTION - MCGUIRE NUCLEAR STATION, UNITS 1 AND 2 By letter dated January 15, 1986, and in response to 10 CFR 50.61, " Fracture Toughness Requirements for Protection Against Pressurized Themal Shock," you provided reference temperatures (RTreactor vessel beltline materials cSIku) lated for the s for the McGuire Nuclear Station station. We have reviewed your letter and find that the following additional information is needed to conclude our review:
Provide justifications for the copper and nickel contents and the initial stbs:alues as required by paragraph 50.61 (b) (iii) of the FT5 rule, which RT v
""Cu" and "Ni" mean the best estimate weight percent of copper and nickel in the material.
The source of these values must be included in the assessment. The relationship of the material, on which any measurements were made, to the actual material in the pressure vessel must be described."
For the weld metals, which appear to be controlling for Unit 1, it would be acceptable to describe the weldments on which measurements were made and relate them to the vessel welds by their weld wire heat numbers, giving the individual measurements or the number of measurements, their range and their average.
If the values in the submittals are not averages, their derivation should be justified.
Your response is requested within 45 days of this letter.
