REGISTRY OF RADIOACTIVE SEALED SOURCES AND DEVICES SAFETY EVALUATION OF DEVICE NO.1 NR-345-D-801-S DATE: SEP 3 01992 PAGE 2 OF 4 DEVICE TYPE: Cigarette Quality Assurance Gauge Source Holder DESCRIPfION:
The bronze device has the physical appearance of a box approximately 8-1/2" in length, 3-1/2" in height, and 3-1/4" in width, with a titanium " measuring tube" and " rod guide" passing through the 3-1/4" dimension of the box near one end.
The measuring head, consisting of a bronze box containing the source, ionization chamber, and other electrical components, is attached to the remainder of the device, the mounting bracket, by means of a dovetail extending the length of the head. The measuring head sliden into a dovetailed slot on the mounting bracket where it is held in position by means of a " safety lock" (requires key to unlock) and a set screw. In order to gain access to the source it is necessary to remove the measuring head from the mounting bracket, remove the metal plates secured to the end of the head by screws, and then remove the brass bar (secured ugjp-in place with two screws) on which the foil type source is ,
secured. The source is secured in a depression in the brass bar by means of a titanium foil placed over it and held in place by 4 screws which secure two metal plates bearing on two edges of the titanium foil.
The measuring tube passes between the source and the ionization chamber so that the radiation from the source may penetrate the 0.1 mm wall tube and the cigarette rod and enter the ionization chamber. The distance from the source to the ionization chamber is approximately 15 mm.
LABELING:
The device bears a metal label 52 mm by 74 mm, purple on yellow, with the radiation symbol, the radioisotope and amount of radioisotope, and the wording " CAUTION-RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL."
The brass bar on which the source is mounted does not bear a label.

REGISTRY OF RADIOACTIVE SEALED SOURCES AND DEVICES SAFETY EVALUATION OF DEVICE HQui NR-345-D-801-S DATE: SEP 3 01992 PAGE 3 OF 4 DEVICE TYPE: Cigarette Quality Assurance Gauge Source Holder EXTERNAL RADIATION LEVELS:
With the device mounted on the cigarette machine (" measuring tube" empty, i.e. , no cigarette rod present) , radiation levels at one foot from the device in areas accessible to individuals (including extremities) do not exceed 5 mr/hr. With a cigarette rod in the tube (machine operating) these levels drop to 0.3 mr/hr maximum and 0.2 mr/hr average.
OUALITY ASSURANCE AND CONTROL:
Hauni Richmond, Inc. maintains a quality assurance and control program which has been deemed acceptable for licensing purposes by NRC. A copy of the program is on file with the Source Containment and Devices Branch.
