RJ Reynolds Sr 90 Hauni Sources in Puerto Rico -Reply Reply l
Just read your message...
No problems to report regarding leak tests. They were performed right after they were j
cited last year and continued to do them: I learned this during this recent inspection.-
[ Note that the 1 1/2 year lapse was cited last year.). They are very sensitive to the potential for leaks. They showed me how they did them and it appeared adequate [they i
-removed the source assembly from the device behind a plastic shield and then wiped
[
with a long, wetted Q tip around where the sources are located, i.e., around the sources in the assembly and where they fit in the device, not the sources themselves as that may compromise the integrity of the sources). Please keep us posted as to any necessary followups in this case Let me know if you need more info. Thanks...

update Users Manual-to change instructions that say if the electronic calibration is not successful then do manual TO if e calis not successful then send for service. And remove the pages which give the manual cal instructions.
- 3. HR will send the NRC a copy of the Amersham (Germany) analysis of the sources when it is completed. (The analysis has not been started yet.)
??3. 'NRC willissue an IN to " gauge users" notifying them of the change.
??4. 'NRC will do Newsletter.
- = HR is concerned about the negative PR ti.at may result from
- broadcast" of the information that sources are used in the process line of cigarette making.
This letter is to confirm our telephone conversation on March 18,1997, regarding the Sr 90 leaking sources in the model 60-01 DS gauge. Based on our conversation, our understanding is that:
i
- 1. The Hauni Richmond model H1347 gauge is not manually calibrated.
- 2. Hauni Richmond agrees that the NSRB 14DS works 15e same as the 60-01 DS with regard to source movement and calibration, therefore should be included in this analysis. Hauni Richmond believes that none'of these are currently in active use, but that some may still be possessed by licensees.
- 3. For the models 60 01 DS and NSRB 14DS, there is at least a 1 millimeter gap between the shutter and the source face, therefore the direct wipe testing of the device would not be a contributing factor to the wear / damage issue.
- 4. To the best of Hauni Richmond's knowledge, only R.J. Reynolds (RJR) was doing the manual calibration, but licensees other than RJR were doing the direct wipe test.
- 5. Hauni Richmond has already spoken with their customers using the model 60-01 DS to inform them that the manual calibration is NOT to be performed. Hauni Richmond is removing the users manual page that gives the manual calibration procedures. Hauni Richmond is also going to amend any necessary pages in the users manual to remove references to the users manual that direct the user to perform the manual calibration procedures. Hauni Richmond will send copies of these changes to the NRC to be placed in the registration certificate files of both the model 80-01 DS and the model NSRB-14DS devices.
G. Hauni Richmond agrees that the NRC will amend the registration certificates of both the model 80-01 DS and the model NSRB-14DS devices to include a Reviewer Note informing license reviewers that the manual calibration is not to be performed on these devices.
- 7. Hauni Richmond will forward to the NRC a copy of the Amersham (Germany) source analysic when it is completed. At the time of our conversation, the analysis had not been started.
- 8. The NRC willissued an Information Notice to alllicensees authorized to possess gauges informing them of the change in calibration procedures.
- " D.Basinger is concerned about the NRC IN b/c of negative PR over " broadcasting" the fact that sources are used in the process line of cigarette making.
