. 9 EVALUATION OF THE NEED FOR FIRE PROTECTION OF STEEL PENETRATING FIRE BARRIER WALLS MCGUIRE NUCLEAR STATION DUKE POWER COMPANY 1.0 STATEENT OF PROBLEM Gypsum board on metal stud fi re barrier walls are constructed on elevations 716, 733, and 750 to provide partial barrier separation and act as a radiant energy shield such that a fire will not affect redundant pumps and/or motors required to achieve cold shutdown under an Appendix R fire scenario. These walls run floor to ceiling and provide an effective barrier to the spread of flame and hot gases between pumps.

Since these barriers were installed subsequent to initial plant design, they had to be built around some seismic support steel and some structural steel. The concern raised by the NRC was that the expansion or failure of this steel, when heated, might cause a breaching of the fire barrier, allowing the radiant transfer of heat to adjacent pumps.

This analysis was performed to determine the size opening in these barriers required to cause damage to adjacent pumps or motors.

2.0 NETH000 LOGY The methodology applied to conduct this analysis consisted of two basic parts,1) define the damageability of pumps and mators and 2) determine the conditions capable of causing damage.

t 2.1 Damageability The radiant heat flux thresholds published for equipment damage vary widely. As a piece of equipment is exposed to a radiant heat flux, the surfaces begin to heat. At the same time, the surfaces are cooled by conduction and convection. The damage level is usually related to a component temperature which is a I

'o 9 function of radiant heat flux, time, convective cooling, conduc-tion and radiation losses. For this evaluation, conservative values of threshold radiant heat fluxes were used as follows:

1) Motors: for motors, a heat flux of 20 kW/m2 was used.
  • This was the minimum flux at which cable insulation degradation occurred in small scale tests sponsored by EPRI (1). Since the insulation on motor windings is shielded from direct radiation by motor housings, this is a conservative threshold.
2) Pumps: for pumps, a heat flux of 30 kW/m2 was used.

Bryan (2) suggested a value of 37.5 kW/m2 for the onset of equipment damage. Values for some cable materials degrade at higher fluxes (teflon, 43 kW/m2 ).

2.2 Radiant Heat Transfer Figure 1 shows a layout, elevation view, of a pump or motor exposed to radiant heat from a wall opening a height above the floor of H, an opening height of b and at a distance from the pump / motor of r. For a worst case, r can be taken as d, the per-pendicular distance from the equipment surface to the wall. Fig-ure 2 shows the resulting plan view with an opening width of w

s 1 For a conservative simplification, the emissivity was taken at its maximum value of 1.0 The transmissivity of the atmosphere was also taken at its maximum value of 1.0 This yields the sim-plified conservative equation: '

q=F a(Tf 4-Te) 4 To quantify F, the view factor, the parallel plane geometry was assumed. This approach is similar to that developed by the Amer-ican Iron and Steel Institute for evaluating heat transfer to external steel members outside a window exposed to a fire inside the building. Figure 3 on page 6 shows the geometry for this view factor and defines X and Y.

The generalized form of F for this geometry for an opening of width and height is given below:

Three flame temperatures were used in calculating the radiant heat flux from openings; 1100 K (1520 F), 1200 K (1700 F) and 1300 K (1880 F). Typical flame temperature from burning cable c' insulation is around 1100 K (5). The flame temperature from other burning solids such as polystyrene or polypropylene is reported as 1200 K (6) and from burning solvents such as hexane j is 1300 K (6). These temperatures are very conservative for these plant areas. These temperatures can be related to the tem-perature of the ASTM E-119 furnace exposure (standard time and l temperature) at 30 minutes, I hour and 2 hours2.314815e-5 days <br />5.555556e-4 hours <br />3.306878e-6 weeks <br />7.61e-7 months <br /> respectively.

O t The equipment temperature was assumed to be 300'K. Attachment 2 provides the calculation of radiant flux in W/m 2 -for these flame temperatures and various values of X and Y.

To calculate the total radiant flux received by the target, .the fluxes received from each portion of the opening (as shown in Figure 3) must be summed 9

  • 91 + 42 + 43 + 44 For worst case, maximum flux for minimum total opening area, the target must be in line with the center of the opening. This means that a1 = a2 and bi=b2 and that 41 " 42 " 43 = q4 or q = 441 The values for qi as calculated and shown in Attachment 2, are one-fourth of the total worst case flux. In order to determine the minimum area of an opening to create a threshhold flux, val-ues of X and Y which yield a flux of q critical were tabulated.

4 The area of the opening would be given by the following equation:

A = 4 X Yd2 The minimum area is given by the minimum product of XY. Tables 1 through 6 show the values of X and Y to provide critical fluxes and show the minimum product of XY. Based on these tables the following six equations for minimum area were developed as a v function of d, distance from the wall (in inches):

4.0 CONCLUSION

S Based on the results in section 3.0 only one case, Case 1, elevation 716*-0" west of Column line 56, need be considered in the realm of credibility. For all other cases, the equipment is located far enough -

from the wall to require unreasonably large openings, almost equiva-lent to wall collapse. Since the steel penetrating these walls does not support the walls, wall collapse from expansion or failure of penetrating steel is not credible.
