This is in reference to your request dated November 24, 1986 for renewal of
!
your byproduct material license. In order to complete our review, we need the
{
following additional informations
!
.
I
1.
Prior to disposal as normal waste, radioactive waste must be surveyed to
!
determine that its radioactivity cannot be distinguished from
i
i
background. Wastes should be surveyed with a portable GM survey
,
instrument with a pancake probe. The instrument should be sufficiently
!
,
,
sensitive to detect H-3, C-14, and I-125 contamination. This instrument
,
should be checked at least annually for proper response to radiation.
,
You should submit a description of the surveys which will be performed
'
'
prior to disposal of radioactive waste to the normal trash, as well as a
,
description of the survey instrument which you will use to perform these
!
'
surveys. Also, describe the method used to ensure proper instrument
,
response, and state the response-check frequency.

2.
Although your letter dated November 2,1981 states that you will conduct
i
,' -
wipe tests on a quarterly basis, it did not include the following
'
.
information:
i
s.
The manufacturer, model number, type of instrument, and counting
efficiencies of the equipment to be used to analyse the wipe tests.

i
b.
A drawing of each area to be surveyed, identifying relevant
l

features such as active storage areas, active waste areas, and use
,
l
locations. Indicate locations where wipe tests will be made.
!

-
.
.c.
Corrective action which will be taken to reduce contamination
levels if they exceed 200 dpa per 100. square centimeters.
