Process Control Program for Solidification / Dewatering of Radioactive Waste from Liquid Systems Current Revision Number:
7 Effective Date: 6/11/98 p[k%hj. lM If the effective date of the PCp is within the period covered 8/# W 7p3 report, then a description and justification of the changes to the PCP is IbdMgg required (T.S.6.5.D). Attach the sidelined pages to this report.
Changes / Justification:
Addendum to Section C (INocess Control Program Changes) of the Effluent And Waste Disposal Annual Report Solid Waste And Irradiated Fuel Shipments.
The purpose of the Process Control Program (PCP) is to detail the means by which the dewatering and/or solidification of radioactive waste from liquid systems can be assured, in accordance with applicable federal regulations and other requirements governing the disposal of solid radioactive waste.
By adding section 11.0 (Processing Certain Waste Liquids by Evaporation) to the PCP we do not in any way reduce the effectiveness of the program (PCP). On the contrary we provide an alternative processing method to enhance the program. We effectively dewater a slurry (via evaporation) to produce a low level solid which, when disposed or processed, is in full compliance with the applicable regulations of the disposal / processing facility and all federal regulations.
This method has multiple advantages:
- 1. _ lt effectively reduces the volume of the material.
- 2. It eliminates the need for solidification of the material.
- 3. It produces a solid which is an acceptable form for disposal.
- 4. It puts no undue burden on the ADT system.
- 5. it ensures that materials that would foul the ADT resin beds do not enter the system.

RADIOACTIVE WASTE FROM-LIQUID dhMN SYSTEMS Page 22 of 27 11.0 PROCESSING CERTAIN WASTE LIQUIDS BY EVAPORATION 11.1 PurDose To establish an alternate method of processing certain non-combustible, aqueous, low-level waste liquids by evaporation. This method utilizes drum heaters to effectively aid the evaporation of the liquids, resulting in a greatly volume reduced solid (the particulate) which can then be further processed or sent for disposal. This method greatly relieves the load on the Aerated Drains System.
11.2 Ap_plicability The following non-combustible, aqueous, waste liquids may be processed using this procedure:
1.
Laundry sludge
- 2. Aqueous decon solutions 3.
Painters waste wash water 4.
Mop bucket slurry I
5.
Turbine Building sump sludge 6.
Aqueous solutions of floor stripper and/or wax This list is not to be considered complete. Items may be added or deleted upon evaluation of Rad Waste System Engineer.
11.3 Seauence of Ooeration 1.
Place drum heater band (s) on desired barrels.
2.
Ensure the contents of the drum are above the top edge of the heater band (s).
3.
Energize the heater band (s).
4.
Continue heating until the liquid has been evaporated off.
5.
Dispose of the solids.
11.4 Verification of Absence of Free Water Absence of free water can normally be determined visually during and after the evaporation cycle. Each container of processed liquids SHALL be inspected to verify the absence of free water. IE free water is detected, THEN additional evaporation or i
absorption of the free water SHALL be done.
11.5 Disposition The resultant solids should be efficiently packaged for storage and/or disposal.
