REQUEST BY CAROLINA POWER & LIGHT COMPANY THAT THE STAFF RES UI.1E ACTIVE REVIEW OF EXEMPTION APPLICATION By a memorandum dated May 15, 1986 we transmitted to the Commission a petition by fir. Wells Eddleman seeking a hearing on the application of Carolina Power and Light Company for an exemption from the require-r.ien.s of Section IV.F.1 of Appendix E to 10 C.F.R. Part 50.

Thereafter , on June 16, 1986 we advised the Commission of CP& L's request that the staff hold in abeyance active review of the exemption i application and the request for a hearing on the exemption. In a letter dated July 10, 1986, addressed to Ilarold Denton , CP&L has now

" request [ed] that the NRC staff resume active review of CP&L's request for exemption from 10 C.F.R. Part 50 Appendix E Section IV.F.1. . . ."  ;

A copy of CP&L's letter is enclosed for your consideration. Pursuant to this request , the staff is proceeding with its review of the pending cpplication for an exemption.

Dear Mr. Denton:

1 Carolina Power & Light Company (CP&L) roguests that the NRC staff resume active review of CP&L's request for exemption from 10CFR50 Appendix E, l Section IV.T.1, transmitted to you by Reference (1). As discussed in Reference (2), 'CP&L has been in the process of consulting with the involved off-site response organizations on the scheduling of exercises for SENPP. This process is now completa. An annual emergency exercise, as described in Reference (3), is now scheduled during October.

A favorabia decision is requested by August 11, 1986, in order to support planning efforts for the upcoming emergency exercise.
