SUBJECT:

UNQUALITIED MISSILE RESISTING TIRE D00R BEDIC INSTALLED IN VITAL AREAS

I On November 1-5, 1982 our fire protectitm inspectors performed an inspec-tion at the Callaway Nuclear Plant, Unit 1 during which they identified l

several fire doors without permanently affixed fire rating labels. One of the doors being installed was a missiile resistant door. Number 36042, 1

manufactured by the Moster Safe Company, Hamiltte, Ohio. The licensee j

supplied our inspectors with a Certificate of Compliance from the manu-facturer which certifies that door No. 36042 complies with ASTM E-152 1

and a Class A fire rating.

(Copy Attached) One of our inspectors, Mr. C. Raesey, being unable to find such door design in the UL Building

(

Materials Directory and the DI Approval Guide proceeded to contact Mr. Paul Umbstead, En5 neering Manager, ksler Safe Company to obtain 1

(

additional information regarding the missile door. During the conversa-tien Mr. Ramsey was informed that the door design has never been tested

)

to ASDt E-152.

k'e request that your branch make a vender audit of the Mosler Safe Company l

f to determine whether the missile doors actually comply with the require-1 j

ments of ASD: E-152 and if they do not, determine why the Mosler Safe Cospa is issuing certificates to the contrary. In case the latter is J

true, please obtain a listing of all similar doors sold by the Mosier r

i Safe Company to the nuclear industry for which "incorrect" certificates have been issued.

j

. Please advise if we can provide any further assistance.
