Bimonthly Progress Report No. 3 New Switchgear Building Construction

SUMMARY

In a letter dated June 30,1986,(1) the Connecticut Yankee Atomic Power Company (CYAPCO) provided the NRC Staff with the conceptual design information for the new switchgear building at the Haddam Neck Plant, including a description of the new facility. The major milestone schedule for the construction and implementation phases of this project was provided to the NRC Staff in a letter dated September 30,1986(2) and committed to provide the NRC Staff with bimonthly progress reports. The following is a breakdown of the major activities accomplished and ongoing for the third reporting period.

MAJOR ACTIVITIES Switchgear Building Construction Begins o On March 30,1987, construction of the switchgear building commenced after the conclusion of groundbreaking ceremonies. Construction began two days ahead of the Major Milestone Schedule construction start date.

18691-A-001 3.8 ARCHITECTURAL FINISHES Metal walls and roof panels shall be galvanized steel with manufac-turer's standard primer / finish on unexposed surfaces and Kynar 500 finish on exposed surfaces.

All structural steel shall be primed with one coat of Keeler and Long 3200 epoxy primer after SP6 cleaning. Structural steel exposed to outdoors shall have one coat of urethane finish. Structural steel which needs to be fireproofed shall not be primed.

CMU and concrete interior walls shall have one filler coat and one coat latex acrylic finish. Concrete floors shall have sealer / hardener finish, but health physics floor level shall have epoxy primer, surfacer, and finish over concrete.

Electrical cable trays and hangers shall be galvanized.

Doors shall have one coat alkyd enamel finish over manufacturer's standard primer.

Stairs and handrails shall be galvanized.

Mechanical, electrical and control equipment shall have manufacturer standard finish, ASA light gray No. 61..

Galvanized pipes shall not be coated. Uninsulated carbon steel pipes and hangers shall have manufacturer standard primer and compatible

, Keeler & Long T-1 series alkyd finish. Finish color of fire safety pipes shall be in accordance with ANSI requirements.

Embedded cast iron pipes shall not be coated.

Valves and associated assemblies shall have manufacturer standard finishas.
