Dear Mr. Tiernan:
SUBJECT:
SAFETY EVALUATION CONCERNING CONFORMANCE TO THE ATWS RULE (TACS 59079 AND 59080)
The NRC staff has completed its review of your submittals, dated June 27, 1986, June 11, 1987 and May 12, 1988, which described how you intended to comply with the requirements of 10 CFR Part 50.62, "Requirements for Reduction of RHk From Anticipated Transients Without Scram (ATWS) Events for Light-Water-Coob Nuclear Power Plants," at Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant. Units 1 and 2.
Tte staff finds that the proposed Unit I and 2 designs for the diverse scram systen (DSS) and the diverse turbine trip (DTT) system when installed by the dates required and 2) the currently in-place auxiliary feedwater actuation q
system (AFAS), in lieu of a new diverse auxiliary feedwater actuation system (DAFW), are acceptable with regards to the requirements of 10 CFR Part 50.62.
It should be noted that the NRC staff, currently, is evaluating the need for Technical Specificat'on (TS) operability and surveillance requirements for l
ATWS equipment. The current TS requirements for AFAS are accepuble in meeting the operability and surveillance requirements that would be expected-for DAFW.
4 Upon completion of the staff evaluation of the need for ATWS equipment TS requiren, ents, you shall be notified if any TS amendments are necessary.
Enclosed herewith is our Safety Evaluation.
Sincerely,
$16!A41814EJhy Scott Alexander McNeil. Project Manager Project Directorate I-1 Olvision of Reactor Projects I/II
