Dear Mr. Farrar:

EJordan JPartlow ACRS(10)

Subject:

Safety Evaluation of the IGSCC Inspection at la Salle County Station, linit 1 Your submittal of March 13, 1986, addresses the inspections performed on the reactor coolant system piping during the current outage for la Salle County Station, Unit 1. A total of 126 welds were ultrasonically inspected meeting the requirements of Generic Letter 84-11. In addition, 126 welds in the recirculation piping system had been treated with induction heating stress improvement (IHSI). Two recirculation piping welds were found to have linear indications. These two welds were evaluated assuming the indications were intergranular stress corrosion cracking (IGSCC) and were found to meet all NRC and ASME Code Criteria for continued operation for an 18-month cycle Enclosed is our Safety Evaluation of your submittal. We conclude that the IGSCC inspection performed meets the guidelines in Generic Letter 84-11 and that the plant can be safely operated at least for an additional 18-month fuel cycle.

Because of uncertainties about the longer term behavior of the piping, we request that your plans for inspection and/or modification of the reactor coolant pressure boundary piping systems during the next refueling outage be submitted for our review at least three months prior to start of the outage.

Sincerely,

/S/

Elinor G. Adensam, Director BWR Project Directorate No. 3 Division of BWR Licensing
