t i TECHNICAL REPORT 85-4 SEISMIC ACTIVITY NEAR THE V.C. SUMMER NUCLEAR STATION FOR THE PERIOD OCTOBER - DECEMBER, 1985 BY PRADEEP TALWANI PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR ) AND CYNTHIA S. EVANS RESEARCH ASSISTANT GEOLOGY DEPARTMENT ~ UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA
- COLUMBIA, S.C.
29208 CONTRACT NO. N230519
INTRODUCTION j An analysis of the seismic activity near the V.C. Summer Nuclear Station in South Carolina during October-December, 1985 is presented in this report. A total of 59 events were recorded. Three events occurring in October had magnitudes between 1.0 and 2.0, with the remaining having magnitudes less than 1.0. Eighty percent of the B-quality events located at depths within 2 km from the surface. SEISNIC NETWORK The report is based primarily on data recorded by the four station network operated by S.C.E.&G. and the USGS/USC station JSC. The locations of the stations are shown in Figure 1 and their coordinates are listed in Appendix I. DATA ANALYSIS Hypocentral locations of the events are determined by - using the HYP071 program (Lee and Lahr, 1972) and the velo-city model listed in Appendix II. The event magnitude (M ) is determined from signal duration at station JSC, using the following relation: M -1.83 + 2.04 Log D = where D is the signal duration (seconds).

4 An estimate of daily energy release is determined using a simplified magnitude (M ) energy (E) relation by Gutenberg and Richter (1956). log .8 + 1.5 M 10 g = OBSERVED SEISMICITY FOR THE PERIOD OCTOBER-DECEMBER, 1985 During this three month period, 59 events were recorded with 51 being locatable (see Appendix III). Two swarms of events occurred, October 10-14 with 16 earthquakes, and October 18 with 9 earthquakes. Seismicity decreased from the early part of the year but was higher than that observed in recent years. There were three events with magnitudes greater than 1.0 with the remaining events being less. Five events of B-quality located at depths greater than or equal to 2.0 km. Although the seismic activity was scattered throughout the Monticello Reservoir area, the majority of the earth-quakes located in the central part of the reservoir. A cumulative plot of epicenters of all the events located dur-ing this period is shown in Figure 2 and a cross section of events located within 1.0 km on each side of line AA' and line BB' is shown in Figure 3. Separation of all epicentral locations by month are shown in Figures 4-6.
SUMMARY
OF 1985 Seismicity at Monticello Reservoir had been decreasing annually from the highest level in 1978. However, in 1985 it .-,,y

10 characterized by the swarm in February along with a higher level of seismicity throughout the year (compared to previous years). A total of 555 earthquakes were recorded in 1985. This averaged to about eleven events per week, which is equivalent to the seismicity level for 1980. Twenty-two events had magnitudes between 1.0 and 2.0 with the remainder being less than 1.0. As shown in Figure 8 for January-December 1985, 85% of events with B-quality located above 2 km from the surface, while Figure 9 shows that the majority of the epicenters in that period are concentrated in the middle of the reservoir for 1985. RESERVOIR WATER LEVEL AND ITS COMPARISON WITH SEISMICITY Monticello Reservoir is a pumped storage facility. Any decrease in reservoir level associated with power generation is recovered when water is pumped back into the reservoir. There can be variations up to about five feet per day between the maximum and minimum water level. We have been monitoring this water level to see if there is any correlation between the daily or seasonal changes in the reservoir level and the local seismicity. Figure 10 shows the comparison of water level to seismicity. The top two graphs show the water level and the change of water level per day. The log of energy released per day and the number of. events per day are shown 1

15 on the lower two graphs. These histograms include the unlo-cated events around the reservoir. CONCLUSIONS Seismicity is characteristically low for the fourth quarter of each year at Monticello Reservoir. With respect to the rest of 1985, the seismic activity for this reporting period was in accord with the lower level of sesinicity commonly observed in recent years. Yet, it also maintained the characteristic high level of activity observed throughout 1985. The majority of the earthquakes had magnitudes less than 1.0 and were located within the upper 2 km, while the epicenters clustered mainly in the central portion of the reservoir.
