Lightsource Cell Assembly DESCRIPTION:

The Model P/N 12304725 was a sealed tritium light constructed of borosilicate glass capsule that was internally coated with a phosphor and filled with tritium gas under a pressure of 40 psi (275.79 kPa).

To provide high resistance to breakage every light was embedded into 0.05 inch (1.27 mm) of silicone and sealed 4

inside a steel cell that was then assembled into the optical collimator or tank muzzle reference systems (MRS).

The MRS was then mounted to the tank.

Different style tanks required different optical collimator and attachment hardware.

General Dynamics assigned a unique MRS part number to each unique system.

However, they all used the same source cell.

i The muzzle reference sensor system was used by military tank operations personnel to determine the position of the gun.

l DIAGRAM-1 See attachment 1.

LABELING:

Due to the location of the source cell, labeling of the cell was impractical.

However, the complete MRS was labeled in accordance with Part 20.203 and contractual requirements of Department of Defense (DOD).

CONDITIONS OF NORMAL USE:

The muzzle reference sensor system was installed on a military tank and, therefore, may have experienced harsh environmental conditions.

The devices were intended to be used in ambient environmental conditions throughout the world.

Lightsource Cell Assembly PROTOTYPE TESTING:

Each source is leak tested, visually inspected for compliance with design specification and brightness.

The completed MRS was tested to military specifications to determine whether the unit would operate under temperature and other environmental or operational conditions which are associated with their use.

EXTERNAL RADIATION LEVELS:

The manufacturer reports no detectable radiation levels on any accessible surface of the MRS or the light cell.

OUALITY ASSURANCE AND CONTROL:

All components are built to contractual specifications.

General Dynamics inspects all incoming parts for compliance to design specifications and functionally tested before they are sent to DOD.

The DOD will not accept any MRS that does not meet the contractual agreement.

LIMITATIONS AND/OR OTHER CONSIDERATIONS OF USE:

  • The light cell assemblies contained the in muzzle reference system shall be distributed only to the specific licensee referenced in this document (DOD).
  • Handling, storage, use, transfer, and disposal:

To be determined by the licensing authority.

  • This registration sheet and the information contained within the references shall not be changed without the written consent of the NRC.

Lightsource Cell Assembly SAFETY ANALYSIS

SUMMARY

The August 29, 1991, letter from the Department of the Army (acting as custom user) requested termination of this custom registration certificate.

The Army letter stated that this device was already registered as the Model MRS under another registration certificate.

\\

Based on the initial review of the Model P/N 12304725, and the information and test data cited below, we had concluded that these devices were acceptable for specific licensing purposes.
