r Docket No. 50-344 October 15, 1985 Mr. Bart D. Withers Vice President Nuclear Portland General Electric Company 121 S.W. Salmon Street Portland, Oregon 97204
Dear Mr. Withers:
SUBJECT:
SAFETY EVALUATION, SECTIONS III.G.3 AND III.L OF APPENDIX R TO 10 CFR 50 - ALTERNATIVE SHUTDOWN Enclosed is the staff's Safety Evaluation (SE) regarding the alternative shutdown capability in the event of fire for the Trojan Nuclear Plant.
Previously, the results of the staff evaluation of your Topical Report No.
PGE-1012, " Trojan Nuclear Plant Fire Protection Review," were provided to you in Safety Evaluations dated March 9, 1978 and March 25, 1980. This SE was necessitated because of your proposed revised alternative shutdown design per the requirements of Appendix R, Sections III.G.3 and III.L. The enclosed evaluation is based on PGE submittals dated July 31, 1984 and March 6, 1985.
Based on our review, we conclude that your proposed revised Appendix R alternate shutdown capability with identified modifications and compensatory measures is acceptable for the Trojan Plant.
Sincerely, Edward J. Butcher, Acting Chief Operating Reactors Branch No. 3 Division of Licensing
