The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has issued a huiricane warning for the Florida's east coast.' Erin, currently a tropic 41 storm located 350 miles off the Florida coast, is gaining hurricane speed and is expected to hit the Miaal area by August 1, 1995. The NHC predicts a stars speed of 75 miles per hour j

accompanied by heavy rain.

1 On August 24, 1992, Hurricane Andrew hit the Miaal area and caused significant damage to the Turkey Point site. NUREG-1474 described circumstances that i

existed at the Turkey Point site d wing and following Hurricane Andrew and identified several lessons reinforced and learned. At the request of Mr. Varga, I reviewed NUREG-14?4 and hat :elephone conversations with the licensees of Turkey Point, St. Lucie, nn. Crystal River, who may be affected by the stors, and the regional and res

  • nt staff to ensure that the licensee and agency activities in preparatf or is the hurricane reflect the lessons learned from Hurricane Andrew.

The licensees indicated that their weergexy procedures reflect lessons learned from Hurricane Andrew and, accordingly, their hurricane preparations include: determining timing for plant shutioim testing of offsite communications and onsite power, top,nng of oil and water tanks, securing onsite waste, plant walkdowns to identify Tad secure loose components, and emergency plant staffing.

The licensees also indicated that they would conduct simulator training for operators to p"ctice un probable accident scenarios. The residents are monitoring licen we actions. Region II has initiated communication with the state and federal agencies to coordinate agency activities with them. On August 1, 1995, Mr. Reyes provided an update of the hurricane situation, plant and NRC activities to both the regional and headquarters staff.
