Dear Hr. Richard:
JPartlow
Subject:
Grand Gulf Unit 1 - Preservice Inspection Relief Requests By letters dated August 25, 1983, and May 11, May 22, and September 20, 1984, the Mississippi Power & Light Company requested relief from certain preservice -
inspection ~s required by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)
Code and provided supporting justification pursuant to 10 CFR 50.55a(a)(3).
The staff's evaluation of these requests is enclosed.
Based on its review the staff has concluded that imposition of the preservice inspection requirements identified in the above letters would result in hard-ship or unusual difficulties without a compensating increase in the level of
_ quality and safety. Therefore, pursuant to 10 CFR 50.55a(a)(3) the relief requested by the licensee from these preservice inspection requirements is hereby granted.
On the basis of granting relief from these preservice examination requirements, the staff concludes that the Grand Gulf Unit 1 preservice inspection program is in compliance with 10 CFR 50.55a(g)(3).
Sincerely, origind SMII g 5.R.patm J Harold R. Denton, Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation
