Thadini, Director PWR Project Directorate #8 U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C. 20555 Gentlemen:

Millstone Nuclear Power Station, Unit No. 2 Inservice Testing of Emergency Diesel Generator Auxiliary Systems In an October 31, 1985 letter (I) the Staff advised Northeast Nuclear Energy Company (NNECO) that the safety-related emergency diesel generator (EDG) auxiliary systems would be required to be included in the Inservice Testing Program and be tested to the requirements of ASME Section XI, Subsections IWP and IWV, to the extent practical. The Staff requested that a schedule be provided within 60 days detailing the submittal date of our EDG Inservice Testing Program and conformance of the safety-related EDG auxiliary systems to the Inservice Testing Program and the testing requirements of ASME Section XI, Subsections IWP and IWV. The Staff advised NNECO that the testing currently being performed should be continued until the Code required testing can be performed. The Staff also granted relief from Section XI, Subsections IWP and IWV for an additional 6 months to permit NNECO time to conform to the code.

While NNECO maintains our previously docketed position relative to this issue, in order to facilitate a resolution we will place the EDG auxiliary systems into the Millstone Unit No. 2 Inservice Testing Program pursuant to the following schedule.

o NNECO will submit the acquired Inservice Testing Program and associated relief request by February 28,1986.

o NNECO will implement the submitted program and approved relief request by April 30,1986, o As granted by the Staff NNECO will continue to test the EDG auxiliary systems under the present test procedures until the EDG Inservice Testing Program is implemented.
