Dear Mr. Farrar:

Gray File WKoo

SUBJECT:

INSPECTION AND REPAIR OF REACTOR COOLANT SYSTEM PIPING Re:

Quad Cities Nuclear Power Station, Unit 2 The NRC staff has reviewed the submittals from Commonwealth Edison Company regarding the inspection and repair performed on the Quad Cities, Unit 2 reactor coolant piping systems during the Reload No. 7 refueling outage.

We conclude that the intergranular stress corrosion cracking inspection and repair performed during this outage in response to Generic Letter 84-11 provides assurance that the Quad Cities, Unit 2 plant, with respect to crack growth and weld overlay repair, can be operated safely for the next 18-month operating cycle.

Because of uncertainty regarding the long-term behavior of the piping, your plan for inspection and/or modifications of the recirculation system piping and other reactor coolant pressure boundary piping systems during the next refueling outage should be submitted for our review and comment at least 3 months before the start of the outage.
