Dear Mr. Williams:

JJoyce

SUBJECT:

CONFORMANCE TO REGULATORY GUIDE 1.97 - DAVIS-BESSE NUCLEAR POWER STATION, UNIT N0. 1 By letter dated June 28, 1984 (Serial No. 1059), Toledo Edison Company (TED) submitted a report describing how Davis-Besse meets the requirements of Regulatory Guide 1.97 (R.G.1.97).

The TED report has been reviewed 0y the NRC staff and contractor, EG&G Idaho, Inc. A copy of the contractor's int (rim report, documenting the review to date, is enclosed. Generally it is concluded that TED has provided an

explicit comitment on conformance to R.G.1.97 with the exception of those items identified. However, in some instances, there was insufficient 4

information provided to permit a determination to be made regarding whether or not an exception was justified.

Please review the enclosed interim report and provide responses to the open items within 70 days of the date of this letter. You may also wish to inform

-; us if the report includes any incorrect assumptions or reflects a commitment which is beyond that which you intended. This request for information '

affects fewer than ten respondents; therefore, OMB clearance is not required

. under P.L.96-511.

Sincerely, l

mmmae John F. Stolz, Chief i
